Ben Shelton : youthful career

Shelton preferred to play football as a youngster instead of tennis. Despite the fact that both of his parents were involved in tennis, they never pushed him to take up the game. Shelton started playing tennis regularly when he was 12 years old, under the guidance of his father Bryan, who at the time was a collegiate tennis coach.

Shelton thought about competing in ITF Junior tournaments abroad when he was 16 years old, but his father strongly advised him against it, asking: “Why do you need to travel abroad when you’re not the best [player in the U.S.]?”Shelton believes that the fact that he was not always on the go and had a schedule helped his tennis development because of his father’s advise to avoid competing in ITF Junior events overseas.
